Privacy is the very foundation upon which free and democratic societies are built. However, our post-9/11 society is becoming more complex and threats to privacy are increasingly common. More clearly than ever before, the path ahead points to the need for Privacy by Design.
The concept of Privacy by Design was developed in the nineties by Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario. This pioneering concept ensures the protection of privacy through the use of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) - embedding them into the design specifications of information technology, business practices, and physical environments - making privacy the default. Recently, the Commissioner evolved the concept of PETs, extending it to PETs Plus which adds a new dimension - the Positive-Sum paradigm. Building on PETs Plus, the Commissioner demonstrates that it is not necessary to trade off privacy against equally important goals like security and transparency. In fact, it is possible, desirable and feasible to enjoy it all.
Download "Privacy by Design… Take the Challenge." This anthology pulls together, for the first time ever, some of the Commissioner's most important work in the field of privacy. It will enable you to apply the principles of Privacy by Design and ensure that privacy and freedom live well into the future.
