Data Privacy Day 2010

On January 28, 2010, Canada, the United States, and the European Union will celebrate Data Privacy Day together for the third time.  Data Privacy Day events and activities stimulate the development of technology tools to promote individual control over personally identifiable information; encourage compliance with privacy laws and regulations; and create dialogues among parties interested in advancing data privacy and protection.  Among its many goals, Data Privacy Day also promotes privacy awareness and education among teens and young adults, focusing on the privacy issues raised by online activities, including social networking, shopping and online gaming, and the use of mobile and wireless devices, such as cell phones and blackberries.

Data Privacy Day offers numerous opportunities for academics, nonprofits, small businesses and multi-national corporations, government officials and agencies, privacy professionals, educators and students to come together to discuss current data protection and privacy issues in many different venues.  You can get involved by becoming a sponsor, creating educational materials and videos, attending an event in your area, or hosting your own Data Privacy Day event.  Contact us at info@dataprivacyday.org and visit www.dataprivacyday.org if you would like more information.

The Data Privacy Day 2010 effort in the United States and Canada is being coordinated by The Privacy Projects, a nonprofit think tank and research organization dedicated to facilitating the place privacy plays in regulatory controls, technological innovation and consumer protection with key stakeholders; to the development and promotion of privacy standards;  and to the promotion of collaboration, cooperation and shared responsibility in the areas of individual data protection and commercial management of personal information.

The Privacy Projects

The Privacy Projects and Data Privacy Day 2010 would like to thank Dr. Ann Cavoukian and the staff of the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner in Ontario for their unflagging support of Data Privacy Day and their tremendous contributions to this international effort.
