Art Smith is President, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of GS1 Canada, a member of GS1, the world’s leading supply chain standards organization.
Prior to forming GS1 Canada’s forerunner, the Electronic Commerce Council of Canada, in 1997 Mr. Smith had an impressive track record in the Canadian retail industry, making significant contributions to Hudson’s Bay Company, Dylex Limited, and BiWay. Throughout his career, he successfully applied his expertise with leading-edge technology, implementing the first online retail loyalty program in North America (Club Z), developing global classification schema and launching the first home shopping pilot in North America.
Mr. Smith has taken a leadership role in several Canadian supply chain initiatives. He currently serves on various boards and steering committees of supply chain initiatives for grocery (Efficient Consumer Response), foodservice (Efficient Foodservice Response), healthcare (Efficient Healthcare Response), general merchandise (Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions Association), and pharmacy (Efficient Consumer Response for the Pharmacy Supply Chain).
He also represents Canada on several international standards boards and advisory committees involved with global standards shaping the future of the retail supply chain, including:
- Chair, Standards & Services Board, GS1 Canada
- Chair, Business Steering Committee and Strategic Planning Committee, EPCglobal Inc.
- Member, GS1 Management Board
- Member, Board of Governors, GS1 US
- Member, Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions (VICS) Association
Mr. Smith is a graduate of the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario (MBA), University of Waterloo (Computer Science) and holds the designation of Certified Management Consultant (CMC) from the Canadian Association of Management Consultants.
